Remember James Yee? The Chinese Muslim Chaplain in the Army who was arrested a few months ago for espionage in connection with the Guantanamo Bay detainees?
Josh Marshall leads us to this article.
We are told:
Military officials brought the additional charges after an investigation, Duany said. The charges include storing pornographic images on his computer, having sexual relations outside marriage, disobeying an order and making a false official statement.
Yee, who also uses the first Yousef, will be sent to Fort Benning, Ga., where he will continue to perform religious duties but will be barred from having any contact with prisoners at Guantanamo, Duany said.
Now what is interesting is that he's being returned to official duty performing religious duties, barred from contact with Guantanamo prisoners. The article makes no mention, however, of what happened with the suspicions of espionage, but one can make the reasonable inference that if he was still being charged with espionage, or they believed he committed espionage, he'd still be in the brig.
This brings up a couple of possibilities, none mutually exclusive of the other.
(A) Yee is no longer being charged with espionage (or is no longer believed to be connected with espionage) for the reasons described above.
(B) They feel the need to charge him with something (although the reasons outside of "embarassment" are unclear).
(C) Yee was singled out for "special" treatment because he was a muslim.
Either way, this isn't looking quite like the espionage case it was made out to be. Makes you wonder about the other two guys also detained in connection with Guantanamo espionage.
